Second Life Align and Distribute

Spending some time building in Second Life, the key thing that I think is missing are the align and distribute functions that I am familiar with from power point. It seems like some buildings in SL have auto-alignment scripts but these seems like a hack rather than something that I should think should be a key part of the main interface. I need to investigate further, but the main time sink for me in building in SL is this align and distribute issue.

Dave Brauer tells me I can:

objects of the same type by selecting the create wand and making sure the Copy Selection box is checked and the Center Copy box is checked.


which is certainly helpful, but still doesn't give me the distribute function I would like ...

Why isn't Blogger more socially translucent?

I'd like to know why Blogger isn't a little more socially translucent. Seems that Google Analytics can tell me which of my blog posts has been most viewed, but why isn't that information easily available to other readers?

I found some announcement about how blogger was going to integrate google analytics from a year back. Seems like we are still waiting on that.

There is a google analytics API so presumably I could try and build my own widget, but that seems a little redundant if there is some soon to be released analytics/blogger integration released.

Bottom line, I would love to make my blog more socially translucent by exposing analytics information on the blog. I guess the main thing I'd want to show is how many times each post was viewed, and have a link at the top of my blog to most popular posts kind of thing ... There are some tools to see the most commented posts and some other external tools including feedjit. Guess I should give these a try, but again if there's some analytics/blogger integration just around the corner I think I'd rather wait for that ...

Social Proxies for Twitter (Part 2)

So I couldn't resist trying to turn my Twitter Social Proxy system into an actual Twitter app, so that other people could use it. I got set up with the twitter-auth library and a Twitter oauth account. I just managed to get it all working on my dev box yesterday following some sleuthing in google groups.  Actually a key OpenSSL fix was in the comments from the tutorial.  I'm finding twitter development simpler than facebook work, particularly since as well as scripting with curl, you can just view the xml output of requests directly in your browser, e.g. my timeline.  Their wiki documentation is also pretty good.

Farzan & Brusilovsky (2006) Social Navigation Support in a Course Recommendation System

Another paper in my review of social psychology inspired design and analysis of online communities. Again this paper is not particularly inspired by social psychology, rather it just cites the Ling et al. (2005) paper (which is how I found it).

In this paper the authors apply the concept of 'Social Navigation' (Dieberger et al., 2000) to the design of an online courseware system. The authors see this in terms of integrating implicit and explicit feedback and presenting that back to individual users. They indicate that explicit feedback is more reliable but harder to get users to perform (Claypool et al., 2001). This matches with my own perception/experience, but I wonder to what extent that is changing as web interfaces have evolved to make feedback easier?

The archetypal explicit feedback that seems unlikely to elicit responses is the multi-part web form that appears at the bottom of places like Microsoft support pages. I guess the fundamental personal economics of giving explicit feedback are the same however easy or hard it is to provide the feedback, but web 2.0 interfaces like the like/not-like toggle in facebook, or the clapping hand icon in smart.fm that allow the user to leave, albeit simplistic, feedback at the touch of a button must increase the likelihood of users providing explicit feedback. I have also noticed a feedback tab on a number of recent websites that opens up a feedback form that includes links to recent comments from others (appears to be part of the get-satisfaction system that I previously commented on), and makes it easy for the user, but doesn't force them, to classify their feedback or just add their support to the existing feedback of others.

When I say the fundamental dynamics aren't changed by these interface developments I mean that given a user with a particular goal, e.g. fix some software problem, the user is likely to want to get back to their original task rather than leave feedback on a site that has provided helpful information, and so any time spent on feedback is wasted time, unless their is some social aspect to the equation, e.g. you've asked on a mailing list and failing to thank those who answer your requests is likely to impact your ability to get support in the future. Naturally different users are under different time pressures, so reducing the amount of effort/time required to leave feedback will likely increase numbers leaving feedback, but to what extent? Superficially it seems to me that the difference might not be very great unless social factors are involved. I'm unlikely to get reciprocal benefit from Microsoft by leaving feedback on one of their support pages, but if there is 'Social Translucence' of the form that others can see the positive or negative feedback I leave on others contributions, that subsequently impacts my reputation, then the whole dynamic might be changed.

Anyway, that meandering digression aside, in the paper the authors conclude that implicit feedback by itself is also insufficient due to low accuracy, although I'd like to follow up there and read more about those implicit metrics. Anyhow, the authors advocate combining implicit and explicit feedback into a do-it-yourself approach where users natural interaction with the system generates a mix of implicit/explicit feedback. Not quite sure I buy that classification, but I do very much like their approach. The key is that they attempt to make achievement of a personal goal dependent on their contribution to the community.

The authors make adjustments to a real university courseware system as shown in the image to the left, modifying the lists of courses to include indicators of workload and relevance to the students career goals. The key to the authors' do-it-yourself approach is that students also get presented with 'CareerScope' information about their progress towards their career goals which is drawn from how they have rated courses they have taken. This apparently changes the dynamic so that rating courses has a benefit for the student as well as for the community. Experimental results appeared to show that when the CareerScope component was included and used it almost doubled the number of evaluations made by students.

My main concerns with the approach taken is that the progress towards career goals is set somewhat arbitrarily, i.e. taking four courses of relevance to a career goal that have medium difficulty constitutes achieving that goal. The authors are aware that this metric needs further evaluation, but I was unclear whether progress was calculated using individual students relevance assessments versus community relevance assessments. For example, I can imagine that students might find it all too easy to make progress towards a career goal simply by assessing the four courses they had taken as highly relevant and very hard. There seems to be an assumption that students will not 'game the system' and try and bump up their progress by evaluating courses in a particular way. Conversely it may be that the system uses community averages, which would prevent this sort of gaming, but then an individual student might find that their perception of career relevance is different from the majority, and might feel that they are making real progress that is not being displayed. Anyhow, I guess these are relatively minor niggles, or better put, they are interesting future research directions.

I think the overall approach is excellent, and it occurs to me that it is addressing the fundamental issue of human endeavour - how to get lots of self-interested individuals to work for the good of the whole. There must be so much literature on this outside of computer science related recommender systems etc. How to get individuals to contribute to communities? Give them a framework where they are contributing as a side effect of activities that benefit themselves - although I think it is challenging to think of great solutions like this for arbitrary systems. I guess this approach is a mixture of implicit and explicit, although I would have thought that was like getting a rating and time spent on page and taking some function of the two. Here the users are rating explicitly, but they are being asked to do it in a different context ...

Grabbing jpeg screenshots on OSX

So I was relieved to find a faster way of converting from tiff to jpeg on OSX that didn't involve PhotoShop . The grab tool on OSX for getting partial screen shots is a wonderful tool, but I really wish it would let me save screen captures into a format that was more compact and accepted for upload into blogger.

At least I have now found a conversion method for tiff to jpeg on OSX that doesn't involve starting PhotoShop; it seems that the preview tool can save things in many formats. Saves me some time. I still wish that grab would generate jpegs by default. People have tried to convince me that this is possible on OSX, but I have had little success until today. It took me a while to decipher these threads in the mac osx hints forums:

The proposed method of setting the default screen capture appears to have no effect on the format of the images grabbed my grab on OSX 10.5.6:

However I think it may have affected the built in screen capture system which I previously been unaware of. Keyboard shortcuts ShiftCommand3 or ShiftCommand4, dumps the entire screen or selection, respectively, to a file on the desktop. Since setting the defaults these appear to be in jpeg by default. Now that's a huge step forward. Instead of starting grab, grabbing, saving as tiff, opening Photoshop, converting to jpeg, I can now just hit ShiftCommand4 - grab the area I need and then hit the image link button in blogger and upload the image. That is going to save me loads of time! Would be nice if I could rename the file in the file selection window that my browser pops up ...

Social Proxies for Twitter

So my procrastination continues. The latest being to use the twitter API to pull out the relative activity levels of my twitter friends and use it to resize their images. This is all happened after I read Erickson and Kellogg's (2000) paper on Social Translucence.

Using a ruby library (subsequently I found an approach I liked better) I grabbed the last 20 tweets from all my friends and calculated the time between now and each tweet in terms of number of days. Then I inverted that and multiplied by 20, so someone who posted their last 20 tweets all today would get a score close to 1 and the more spaced out their tweets are going back in time, the closer to zero their activity score would be. Above you can see the images of all my twitter friends scaled to their activity score, which gives me an interesting view on who are the most active twitterers in my friends over the last week or so.
